The third conditional travels to the past and rewrites it: if the condition had been different, the result would have been different. The past is closed — this is what could have been.

The Formula
if + had + V3 → would have + V3
Both halves travel to the past: the condition carries had + V3, the result carries would have + V3. The machine works in one direction — the past cannot change.

Common Mistakes
