English Negatives

How to say no in English: don’t, doesn’t, isn’t, never — and when to use which. The essentials take about two minutes; extra details are tucked away at the bottom.

01

Saying No

Four ways to say no

A negative sentence says no. "I like coffee" — now take the no away: "I don’t like coffee". English has a few ways to say no, and they all follow small, friendly rules.

🚫

don’t / doesn’t

For actions and habits

I don’t like coffee

🪞

isn’t / aren’t

For be — no helper needed

She isn’t happy

never

Zero times — ever

I never smoke

🙅

no

A short answer — no!

Do you like coffee? — No.

02

The Formula

Three ways to put the no

One helper does the work: do/does + not, placed between the subject and the verb. Be skips the helper — not sticks to be itself. And never needs no helper at all.

03

Common Mistakes

Don’t put the no in the wrong spot

Three places where the no goes wrong: the wrong helper, the double no, and be with do. Fix these four and you are safe.

I no like coffee.

I don’t like coffee.

💡 No is not a verb helper. With an action, use don’t: I don’t like coffee.

She don’t like tea.

She doesn’t like tea.

💡 With he/she/it, the helper is doesn’t.

I don’t never smoke.

I never smoke.

💡 One no per sentence is enough — never already says no.

He doesn’t is here.

He isn’t here.

💡 Be does not need do/does: is + not → isn’t.

05

No vs Not

One no for things, one no for verbs

No stands alone or before a noun. Not goes with a verb — it never stands alone.

No + noun
no problemno timeno ideano money
Not + verb
not todaynot yetnot nownot again
06

Short Forms

don’t = do + not

Written English loves the short forms. The apostrophe marks the missing letter — no space, no excuse.

1

don’t = do + not

One word, no space

do not → don’t · I don’t know

2

doesn’t = does + not

Same, for he/she/it

does not → doesn’t · She doesn’t work

3

isn’t / aren’t = be + not

The be short forms

is not → isn’t · are not → aren’t

4

never stays never

Already short — no changes

never · never · never

⚠️ One no per sentence is enough — never already means not.
