Will: Decisions on the Spot

Promises, offers, and decisions made in this very second: I will help you, I will call you back. Will is the future you choose at the moment of speaking. Formula: will + base verb.

01

What Is Will?

The future, decided now

Will talks about the future from the present moment. You use it for decisions made while you speak, promises, offers, and predictions without evidence. One shape fits all: will + base verb.

Instant decisions

decided right now, while speaking

The phone is ringing — I will answer it

🤝

Promises

a word you give someone

I will help you with your homework

🎁

Offers

help offered on the spot

I will carry that bag for you

🔮

Predictions

guesses — no evidence needed

I think it will rain tomorrow

⚠️ will + base verb — never will + to, never will + -ing.

02

The Formula

One helper, no changes

The beauty of will: it never changes. I will, she will, they will — same word for everyone. The main verb stays in its base form, and negatives and questions are the simplest in English.

03

Common Mistakes

Four will-traps

Will is simple — so simple that learners add things to it. Three additions and one helper make up almost every mistake.

I will to call you.

I will call you.

💡 No to after will — the verb comes straight after it.

She will calls you.

She will call you.

💡 No -s with will — base verb for everyone.

I will working tomorrow.

I will work tomorrow.

💡 No -ing after will — base form only.

Do you will come?

Will you come?

💡 Will is its own helper — do/does stay away.

Will or Going To?

The same test, the other way

The question from the going to lesson works backwards too: decide before speaking, and going to wins; decide while speaking, and will takes over.

Did you decide before you started speaking?
Yes — going toI am going to visit my grandma
No — decided nowI will visit her next week
