Must & Have To: Who Makes the Rule?

Must is the inner voice, have to is the outside world. And the negatives are not twins: mustn’t says no, don’t have to says no need.

01

Must & Have To

Two rules, two voices

Must and have to both mean obligation — but they say it with different voices. Must is personal: your feeling, your rule. Have to is external: the world demands it. And the negatives take opposite directions.

🧠

Must — your own rule

the speaker’s feeling

You must try this cake

🌍

Have to — the outside rule

the world demands it

I have to wear a uniform at work

🚫

Mustn't — forbidden

do not do it, ever

You mustn't smoke in here

🌤️

Don't have to — optional

not necessary, your choice

You don't have to come

⚠️ Mustn't = forbidden. Don't have to = not necessary. Opposite jobs, do not mix them up.

02

The Formula

One modal, one normal verb

Must behaves like can: bare verb after it, no changes ever. Have to behaves like a normal verb: it takes -s (has to), builds negatives with don’t, and questions with do.

Common Mistakes

Four traps around obligation

The traps come from mixing the two systems: giving must the manners of have to, or reading mustn’t as not necessary. Both mistakes change the meaning.

She must goes now.

She must go now.

💡 After must, the verb is bare — no -s, no to.

He have to work on Saturdays.

He has to work on Saturdays.

💡 Have to behaves like a normal verb: he has to.

You don't must smoke here.

You mustn't smoke here.

💡 The negative of must is mustn't, not don't must.

We must to leave early.

We must leave early.

💡 Must + bare verb: no to.
