Point, surface, or space
Three place prepositions cover most of daily English. The difference is how big the place feels: a point, a surface, or a space you can walk into.
at — a point

on the bus, in the car
Vehicles split into two worlds: ones you walk onto (on) and ones you climb into (in). Memorize the pair and the rest follows.
on — you stand or walk
