Phrasal Verbs: The Meaning Mutants

Verb + particle, new meaning: give up is not giving anything up — it is stopping. The particle mutates the verb. Learn the pair as a new word.

01

Phrasal Verbs

The meaning mutants

A phrasal verb is a verb plus a small particle — and together they mean something completely new. Give up is not give + up. It is one word: stop trying.

🧬

The mutation

verb + particle = new meaning

She gave up smoking

🔬

The particle changes everything

look at / look for / look after / look up

Can you look up this word?

🔀

The object can split

look up the word — look it up

I looked it up

🎭

Literal or mutant

pick up: from the floor, or learn

⚠️ Learn the pair as one new word: give up = stop, look up = search.

02

The Formula

verb + particle + object

The verb carries its particle, and the particle carries the new meaning. The pronoun is the splitter: it slips between the verb and the particle.
