At 5, On Monday, In July
Three tiny prepositions divide all of time: at for exact moments, on for days and dates, in for months, years and longer periods. Plus a few rebels that refuse to follow.
At, On, In
Time, divided in three
Time is one long line, and English cuts it into three pieces: at for small exact points (5 o'clock), on for days (Monday), in for big periods (July, 2026).
At — exact moments
clock times and pointsThe meeting is at 3 p.m.
On — days & dates
days of the week, datesI work on Mondays
In — big periods
months, years, seasonsWe travel in July
Parts of the day
in the morning, at nightI drink coffee in the morning
⚠️ at + clock time · on + day/date · in + month/year. At night and in the morning are the famous rebels.
The Big Three
One rule per preposition
Three prepositions, three jobs — memorize the pattern and the cases follow. The list at the bottom covers the most useful ones.
