Used To, Be Used To & Get Used To: The Comfort Zone
Three used tos, three jobs: past habit, present comfort, and the process of getting comfortable. I used to walk to work. I am used to walking. I got used to it.
The Three Used Tos
The comfort zone
Used to appears three times in English — and each one is a different job. The earlier lesson gave you past habit. Now meet the other two: comfort (be used to) and the process of getting comfortable (get used to).
Used to + base verb
the past habit (the earlier lesson)I used to walk to work
Be used to + -ing
the comfort — it feels normal nowI am used to walking to work
Get used to + -ing
the process — it takes timeI will get used to the cold
The be/get split
be = state, get = changeShe got used to driving on the left
⚠️ used to + verb = past habit. be used to + -ing = comfort. get used to + -ing = becoming comfortable.
The Formula
three patterns, three times
The base verb rides with used to. The -ing form rides with be used to and get used to. Get is the process verb: it changes with time — got, will get, has got.
Iused to walkto work
Iam used to walkingto work
Youwill get used to it
Iam not used to drivingon the left
