The Biggest of Them All
Three or more? Then you need the superlative: the biggest, the best, the most expensive. One champion, one title, one formula.
What Is a Superlative?
One champion only
The superlative crowns a winner: the biggest, the fastest, the best. Short words take the + -est; long words take the most; irregulars do their own thing. And the group is always introduced by in.
the + -est
short words: fast → the fastestThe elephant is the biggest animal
the most + word
long words: the most expensiveThis is the most expensive hotel
Irregular stars
good → the best · bad → the worstShe is the best singer
The group: in
one of a group, with inHe is the fastest runner in the world
⚠️ The + superlative + in + group: the tallest student in class.
The Formula
Same skeleton, one champion
The line is the same every time: subject + be + the + superlative + in + group. Only the adjective changes shape.

Spelling Rules
The -est twins of -er
Good news: -est follows the exact same spelling rules as -er. If you know one, you know the other.
Just add -est
most words, no change
fast → the fastest · tall → the tallest
Add just -st
words ending in e
nice → the nicest · large → the largest
Double the consonant
short words ending consonant-vowel-consonant
big → the biggest · hot → the hottest
-y becomes -iest
after a consonant + y
happy → the happiest · easy → the easiest
⚠️ Irregulars: good → the best, bad → the worst.
Common Mistakes
Four slips before the crown
The traps are the siblings of the comparative ones: the double comparison, the missing -est, and than sneaking in where in belongs.
She is the most tallest in class.
She is the tallest in class.
💡 Never the most + -est. Pick one.
He is the tall student in class.
He is the tallest student in class.
💡 Three or more people → superlative with -est.
This is the expensivest hotel.
This is the most expensive hotel.
💡 Long words take the most, not -est.
She is the best than me.
She is the best.
💡 Superlatives use in + group, never than.
