Reported Speech: The Telephone Game

What she said, one step away: "I am tired" becomes she said she was tired. The tense steps back, the pronouns flip — the telephone game of English.

Reported Speech

The telephone game

Reported speech passes the message on: you do not repeat the exact words, you report them. The tense steps one rung back, and the pronouns flip to match the speaker.

The exact words transform into reported words: the tense steps back one rung, and the pronouns change shoes.

"I will help you."

Reported speech

Common Mistakes

Four telephone slips

The message breaks when tell loses its listener, when the tense refuses to step back, or when say tries to carry a person.

She said me that she was tired.

She told me that she was tired.

💡 say + to, tell + person (no to).

She said that she is tired.

She said that she was tired.

💡 The tense steps back: am → was.

He told that he would help.

He said (that) he would help.

💡 tell needs a person — he told me.

She said that she has finished.

She said that she had finished.

💡 Present perfect steps back: has → had.
