From Now Until Then

By sets a deadline, until sets a limit, during fills a period, from...to spans it. The time prepositions beyond at/on/in.

01

Time Prepositions, Part 2

Deadlines, limits, and spans

at/on/in handle the big three; these four do the fine work: by = no later than, until = up to that moment, during = inside a period, from...to = the whole span.

By — deadline

no later than that time

Send the report by 5 p.m.

Until — limit

up to that moment, then stop

The shop is open until 9 p.m.

🌊

During — inside

within a period of time

I slept during the movie

↔️

From...to — span

the whole stretch between

The class runs from 9 to 11

⚠️ By = deadline · Until = stop point · During = inside · From...to = whole span.

02

The Fine Print

Four words, four jobs

Each of these four answers a different timing question. Once you know the question, the preposition picks itself.

1

by

answer to: by when? — the deadline

Finish it by Friday · by noon · by next month

2

until

answer to: how long? — the stop point

Open until 9 p.m. · wait until Friday

3

during

answer to: when inside? — the period

during the summer · during the meeting

4

from...to

answer to: which span? — start to end

from Monday to Friday · from 9 to 11

⚠️ Deadline → by. Stop point → until. Inside a period → during. Span → from...to.

03

Common Mistakes

Four swaps that change the meaning

By and until are the pair that confuses everyone: by says no later than, until says keep going to that point. Mixing them changes the sentence.
