Perfect Timing

Time clauses are the clockwork of English: when the clock says it is time, the action happens. One golden rule — in time clauses, the present tense does the job of the future.

01

Time Clauses

The golden rule: no will in time clauses

A time clause starts with when, while, until, as soon as, before, after or by the time. It points to the future, but it never takes will — the simple present stands in for it.

⚖️

The golden rule

time clause + present, not will

I will call you when I get home

📏

Until — up to that point

action continues to the limit

I will stay here until you come back

🚀

As soon as — the instant

immediately after that moment

Call me as soon as you arrive

🏁

By the time — no later than

before that deadline passes

By the time you wake up, I will be gone

⚠️ No will inside a time clause — ever. The will lives in the main clause only.

02

The Formula

Two orders, one meaning

The time clause can open the sentence or close it. Either way, the main clause carries the future — the time clause stays in the present.

⚠️ Time clause first → add a comma. Time clause second → no comma.

03

Common Mistakes

The will must not cross the line

Every mistake here is the same mistake: will sneaking into the time clause. The main clause gets the future; the time clause stays in the present.

I will call you when I will get home.

I will call you when I get home.

💡 No will after when — present tense does the job.

Wait until I will come back.

Wait until I come back.

💡 Until takes the present, never will.

As soon as I will arrive, I will message you.

As soon as I arrive, I will message you.

💡 As soon as + present: the instant belongs to the present.

By the time I will arrive, the movie will start.

By the time I arrive, the movie will start.

💡 By the time + present — the will stays in the main clause.

Until, As Soon As, or By the Time?

Three ways to time an action

All three look at the future — they just frame it differently. Ask what kind of moment you mean, and the clause picks itself.

Does the action stop at the moment?
Yes — untilI will wait until you come back
No — it starts thereI will call you as soon as I arrive
