If you're preparing for an English exam like IELTS or TOEFL, or simply trying to improve your academic writing, you already know this: paraphrasing is unavoidable.
It's also surprisingly hard when you first start. You read a sentence, understand it perfectly, and then... you freeze. Everything you write feels too close to the original. Or worse, you swap a few words and hope nobody notices.
Here’s the thing — good paraphrasing isn’t about finding fancy synonyms. It's about genuinely understanding the idea and expressing it in your own words. Let me show you how.
What Makes a Good Paraphrase?
A strong paraphrase keeps the original meaning but changes both the words and the sentence structure. It’s not a summary—you’re not shortening anything. You’re just saying the same thing in a different way.
The key rule is simple: if you can look at your paraphrase and still see the original sentence hiding underneath, you haven’t paraphrased. You’ve just tinkered.
Four Practical Paraphrasing Techniques in English
These are the tools I teach my own students. They’re straightforward, and once you practice them a few times, they become almost automatic.
1. Swap Synonyms (Carefully)
This is the most obvious technique, and also the most tempting to overuse.
Original: The company experienced a significant drop in profits last quarter.
Weak paraphrase: The firm saw a big fall in earnings last quarter.
That’s okay, but it barely changed. Here’s the problem: if you only swap individual words, you’re still thinking in the structure of the original.
More natural paraphrase: Last quarter, the company’s profits took a major hit.
Notice I changed the sentence structure too. And I didn’t force fancy synonyms like diminution or remunerations. Keep it natural.
Common mistake to avoid:
Don’t use a synonym unless you’re 100 % sure it fits. For example:
She was glad about the results – correct.
She was glad with the results – incorrect. Glad takes about or that, never with.
2. Change the Word Order
English is flexible. You can often move parts of the sentence around without losing meaning.
Original: Many students struggle with paraphrasing because they try to replace every word.
Paraphrase: Because they attempt to replace every word, paraphrasing is something many students struggle with.
This works well, but don’t get too creative. If the sentence starts sounding weird, you’ve gone too far.
3. Change the Parts of Speech
This is one of the most effective paraphrasing techniques in English, and most learners ignore it. Instead of using the same grammatical form as the original, shift it.
Original: The government implemented a new policy to reduce pollution.
Paraphrase: A new policy was implemented by the government to bring about a reduction in pollution.
See what happened? Reduce (verb) became reduction (noun). The sentence also switched to passive voice, which helped distance it from the original.
You can also go the other way: turn nouns into verbs, adjectives into nouns, and so on.
Original: The rapid expansion of the city led to housing shortages.
Paraphrase: The city expanded rapidly, which caused a shortage of housing.
Rapid expansion (adjective + noun) became expanded rapidly (verb + adverb). Small shift, big difference.
4. Add or Remove Details
Sometimes you can paraphrase by including information that’s implied but not stated, or by trimming unnecessary words.
Original: Climate change poses a serious threat to coastal communities worldwide.
Paraphrase: Coastal communities across the globe face serious danger because of climate change.
I added face and reordered the sentence. I also changed threat to danger—not a fancy change, just a different word that fits.
Just be careful not to add information that changes the meaning. That’s not paraphrasing anymore; it’s interpretation.

A Quick Exercise to Try
Take this sentence and paraphrase it using at least two of the techniques above:
The increase in online learning has transformed traditional education systems around the world.
Here’s my version using synonym swap + part‑of‑speech change:
Traditional education systems worldwide have been fundamentally changed by the rise of online learning.
Try writing your own version now. Cover the screen and do it from memory — that forces you to use your own words.
How to Check If Your Paraphrase Is Good Enough
After you write a paraphrase, ask yourself two questions:
- Does it mean the same thing? If you’ve accidentally changed the meaning, start over.
- Does it sound natural? Read it aloud. If it feels clunky or forced, smooth it out.
A good test: explain what the original sentence means to a friend in casual conversation. Whatever you say to them — that’s your paraphrase. Write that down. It’s usually better than anything you can craft by staring at the original.
Why This Matters for Exams
In IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2, paraphrasing is literally part of the scoring criteria. Examiners look for your ability to rephrase the question in your introduction. Same goes for TOEFL integrated writing tasks.
But this isn’t just about exams. Every time you write an email, a report, or even a social media post, you’re making choices about how to express ideas. Strong paraphrasing skills make your writing more flexible and natural.
Put It Into Practice
Pick any sentence from a news article or textbook today. Cover it up and write it in your own words. Then repeat with the next sentence. Do this for ten minutes. In a week, you’ll notice the difference.
