A few years back, I asked a British friend how much his new apartment cost. His face went stiff, and he mumbled something vague. I’d just stepped into one of those invisible walls – an English taboo. If you’re learning English, you’ll quickly find that mastering vocabulary isn’t enough. You also need to know what not to say.

English-speaking cultures (especially the UK, US, Canada, and Australia) have strong unwritten rules about certain topics. Cross them, and you might be seen as rude, pushy, or just plain awkward. Here’s how to spot those landmines – and walk around them gracefully.

Common English Taboos You Should Know

Some subjects are considered private unless the other person brings them up first. The main ones are:

  • Money: Salary, rent, how much something cost, debt. Even “How much do you earn?” is a big no‑no in most settings. Stick to general talk about the economy or cost of living if you must.
  • Health & Body: Commenting on someone’s weight, asking about medical conditions, or giving unsolicited health advice. In casual conversation, “You look tired” is often seen as a criticism, not concern.
  • Religion & Politics: These are classic “dinner table” topics that can quickly turn heated. Unless you know the person very well, avoid deep discussions or strong opinions.
  • Age & Appearance: Asking a woman her age is a cliché for a reason – it’s genuinely rude in many English-speaking circles. Also avoid making personal remarks about someone’s body, clothes, or hairstyle unless it’s a clear compliment (“I love your jacket!” works fine).
  • Relationships & Family: Questions like “Why aren’t you married?” or “When will you have kids?” can feel invasive. Let people volunteer personal details themselves.

The chart below shows which topics are safe for small talk and which ones usually aren’t.

Avoid These

  • Salary & bills
  • Health problems
  • Religion & politics
  • Age & weight
  • Marriage & kids plans

Safe Alternatives

  • Weather, food, travel
  • Hobbies & entertainment
  • Work (general) & study
  • Compliments on effort
  • Weekend plans

Cultural Faux Pas Beyond Words

Some mistakes aren’t about topics, but about behaviour. Here are three big ones that English learners often miss:

Queue jumping. In the UK, cutting in line is a serious sin. People will give you dirty looks or even say “There’s a queue, you know.” Even in more relaxed countries like the US, waiting your turn is expected.

Over‑apologising vs. under‑apologising. In England especially, people say “sorry” all the time – for bumping into someone, for asking a question, for the weather. If you don’t apologise when you should, you seem rude. But doing the opposite (apologising too much for tiny things) can also feel awkward. Watch how locals handle it.

Personal space. In many English‑speaking cultures, standing closer than an arm’s length can make people uncomfortable. This is especially true in the US and Canada. If someone steps back, you’re too close.

Simple Rules to Stay Safe

You don’t have to memorise a long list. Keep these three in mind:

  1. Let them lead. If they bring up money or politics, you can follow. If they don’t, stay on safe ground.
  2. When in doubt, ask politely. “Is it okay if I ask about…?” works wonders.
  3. Use please and thank you generously. Good manners cover a multitude of small missteps.

These tips won’t make you perfect overnight – but they’ll help you avoid the most common landmines. The best way to learn is to practise in real conversations.
