Writing a restaurant review in English doesn't require a Michelin star vocabulary. You just need a simple structure and the right words to describe what you ate, how the service was, and whether you'd go back.
Most learners overthink it. They try to sound fancy and end up with awkward sentences. Better to keep it clear and honest. Let me show you how.
What to Include in Every Review
A good review covers four things:
- Food – What did you order? Was it tasty, bland, or surprising?
- Service – Were the staff friendly, slow, or forgettable?
- Atmosphere – Was the place loud, cozy, cramped, or elegant?
- Value – Did the price feel fair for what you got?
You don't need to mention all four every time. Pick the ones that stood out. If the service was average but the pasta was unforgettable, focus on the food.
Step 1: Start with the Basics
Open with what the place is and who it's for. One or two sentences is enough.
Examples:
- "The Noodle House is a small Vietnamese restaurant in central London."
- "I went to Grill Station last night. It's a casual steak place near the station."
This sets the context. The reader knows right away what kind of restaurant you're talking about.
Step 2: Describe the Food Clearly
Be specific. Instead of "the food was good," say what made it good.
| Instead of this… | Try this… |
|---|---|
| The pizza was good. | The pizza had a crispy thin crust and fresh mozzarella. |
| The soup was bad. | The soup was lukewarm and tasted like canned tomatoes. |
| The steak was nice. | The steak was tender and cooked exactly medium rare. |
Use simple adjectives: fresh, salty, greasy, rich, dry, creamy, bland, spicy.
Example paragraph:
I ordered the grilled salmon with mashed potatoes. The fish was flaky and well-seasoned, though the potatoes were a bit dry. The vegetables on the side were fresh and slightly crunchy.
Step 3: Mention Service and Atmosphere
Keep it short unless something unusual happened.
- Positive: "The waiter was attentive without being pushy."
- Negative: "We waited 20 minutes just to get the menu."
- Atmosphere: "The lighting was dim, and the music was too loud for conversation."
Step 4: Give Your Verdict
End with a recommendation. Would you go again? Who is this place for?
Examples:
- "I'd come back for the ramen, but I'll skip the appetizers next time."
- "Great for a quick lunch, but not for a romantic dinner."
- "Overall, a solid choice if you're in the area and craving Thai food."

Here are two complete examples. Notice how natural they sound.
Positive Review:
Tried the new Italian place on Elm Street last weekend. The spaghetti carbonara was rich and creamy – exactly how it should be. The service was friendly, and the tiramisu was a perfect finish. A bit pricey for a weeknight, but worth it for a special occasion. I'll definitely go back.
Negative (but fair) Review:
Went to Burger House because of the hype. The burger was juicy, but the fries were cold and soggy. The place was loud and messy. Our server was nice, but we had to wait a long time for the bill. Probably won't return. There are better options nearby.
