You don’t need fancy grammar software to catch your own mistakes. Most learners already have a powerful tool open in their browser: Google Search. It’s free, fast, and surprisingly accurate when you know how to use it. Let me show you how.

The Trick: Treat Google Like a Native Speaker

Google’s search engine has seen billions of English sentences. When you type a phrase, it doesn’t just match words – it matches patterns. It knows which combinations sound natural and which don’t.

Here’s the core idea: if your sentence is correct, you’ll see many results with the exact same structure. If it’s wrong, you’ll see either zero results or a correction offered by Google.

Step 1: Put Your Sentence in Quotes

Typing a sentence without quotes makes Google look for each word individually. That won’t help. Use double quotes around the whole phrase you’re unsure about.

Example:
You write: “He go to school yesterday”
Search: "He go to school yesterday"

What you’ll see: few results (maybe zero). That’s your red flag.

Now try: "He went to school yesterday"
Results? Thousands. You’ve found the correct form.

Step 2: Compare Two Versions Side by Side

Sometimes you’re stuck between two options. Google can settle the debate.

Type each one in quotes and see which returns more results. More results usually means more native speakers use that version.

Example:

• "I am used to get up early" → ~500 results
• "I am used to getting up early" → ~2 million results

The second one wins. The “to” here is a preposition, so it needs the gerund (-ing).

Step 3: Use the “Did you mean?” Feature

When you type a clearly wrong phrase, Google often suggests a corrected version. Pay attention.

Search: "I have went to the store"
You might see: “Did you mean: I have gone to the store?”
That’s a direct grammar lesson – no teacher needed.

This works especially well for verb tenses and common preposition mistakes.

Step 4: Look at the Snippets, Not Just the Count

Sometimes the top result isn’t a perfect match. Scroll down and read the snippets that contain your phrase. You’ll see how real websites use it – in context.

Example:
Search: "responsible of"
You’ll see snippets like “responsible of the team” in casual blogs, but also many corrections. The more formal or authoritative sites will use “responsible for”. That’s your answer.

When Google Gets It Wrong

Google isn’t perfect. It counts all web text, including learner errors, forum typos, and machine translations. Always trust the majority pattern, not just one or two results. If both options you compare have similar result counts, ask a native speaker or use a dedicated grammar checker. But for 90% of everyday doubts, this method works.

A Real Example from My Students

A student once wrote: “She suggested me to apply”. He wasn’t sure.
Search: "suggested me to" → ~300 results, many from flawed sources.
Search: "suggested that I" → over 10 million.
He learned that “suggest” doesn’t take an indirect object like that. The correct pattern is “suggested that + subject + verb” or “suggested + -ing”.

One search changed his writing forever.
