The Vocabulary You Actually Need
Most architects I meet already know basic construction terms. What they struggle with is selling the idea in English. So I'll split this into two parts: what to say during design discussions, and what to say when presenting to a client.
Design & Concept Vocabulary
These words help you talk about the thinking behind your work.
- Spatial flow – How people move through a space. "The open plan improves spatial flow between the kitchen and living area."
- Massing – The overall shape and volume of a building. "The massing breaks the structure into two connected blocks."
- Façade – The front or face of a building. "We used glass for the façade to bring in natural light."
- Sightlines – What people can see from a given point. "The layout opens up sightlines across the entire lobby."
- Programme – The functional requirements of a space. "The programme includes three meeting rooms and a flexible event area."
- Context – How the building relates to its surroundings. "The design responds to the context of the historic neighbourhood."
Say these out loud. They sound natural in a meeting, not like textbook examples.
Materials & Finishes
Clients care about how things look and feel. These terms help you describe that.
- Texture – Rough, smooth, matte, glossy. "The texture of the exposed brick adds warmth."
- Finish – The final surface treatment. "We chose a matte finish for the floors to reduce glare."
- Sustainable materials – Recycled wood, low-carbon concrete, etc. "The project uses sustainable materials like reclaimed timber."
- Thermal performance – How well a material insulates. "These windows improve thermal performance by 30%."
Client Presentation Language
Here's where most architects lose confidence. You need to explain value, not just design.
Describing benefits (not features)
Bad: "The ceiling is four metres high."
Good: "The four-metre ceiling creates an open, airy atmosphere. You won't feel cramped even with a large group."
Handling objections
If a client says "this is too expensive," don't defend cost. Talk about value.
"I understand the budget concern. But investing in double‑glazed windows now will cut your energy bills by half within five years. It pays for itself."
Asking for feedback without sounding weak
Avoid: "Is this okay?"
Use: "What are your initial impressions of the layout?" or "Which part of the design resonates with you most?"
Three Quick Wins for Your Next Meeting
- Learn five phrases this week. Pick words from the lists above. Use them in sentences about your own projects.
- Record yourself explaining a design. Listen back. You'll spot exactly where you hesitate.
- Prepare one answer for "What's the concept?" Don't start with technical details. Start with the feeling or problem you're solving.
Start Speaking Like the Architect You Are
