What's a Hyphen?

A hyphen joins things together. Think of it as a glue stick for words.

Use hyphens to:

What's a Dash?

Dashes come in two lengths, and most people only need one of them.

The en dash (–) is slightly longer than a hyphen. Use it for:

• Scores: They won 3–2
• Connections between two equal things: the Boston–New York route

The em dash (—) is the longest. Use it to:

• Create a strong break in a sentence: I wanted to call her — and I almost did — but I lost my nerve.
• Replace commas for more emphasis: One thing was certain — he wasn't coming back.
