Listen, driving for Uber or delivering for DoorDash is tough enough without the added stress of language barriers. You’re already navigating traffic, finding apartments, and dealing with hungry people. The last thing you need is to fumble for the right words when a customer talks to you.

I’ve worked with a lot of drivers over the years. The ones who get the best ratings aren’t always the fastest. They’re the ones who handle those short interactions smoothly. A simple, clear phrase changes everything.

Here are the real phrases you need. No textbook garbage. Just the stuff that works on the road.

Greetings and Confirmation

Keep it short. You’re not making a speech.

When you arrive, say this:

  • “Hi, I’m here for [customer name].”
  • “I’m outside the main entrance.”
  • “On my way. ETA 2 minutes.”

If you’re picking up a passenger:

  • “Hey, are you [name]?”
  • “Hop in whenever you’re ready.”

For deliveries where the customer meets you:

  • “Your order is here. I’m in the blue car.”

Don’t overthink it. Just confirm who you’re looking for and where you are.

Directions and Small Talk

Rideshare riders often ask questions. Be ready.

When they ask how long:

  • “About 15 minutes with this traffic.”
  • “GPS says 20 minutes, but we might hit some lights.”

If they make a comment about the weather or traffic:

  • “Yeah, it’s raining pretty hard today.”
  • “Friday traffic is always like this around here.”

A small laugh and a “Yeah, totally” goes a long way. You don’t need perfect grammar. You need to sound human.

Handling Problems

Problems happen. Wrong address. Missing item. Delayed pickup. Stay calm and use simple language.

If you can’t find the building:

  • “I’m having trouble finding the building number. Can you give me a landmark?”
  • “Is it the house with the red door?”

If the customer says you’re at the wrong place:

  • “Let me double-check the address in the app.”
  • “I’m at the pin location. Can you confirm the street name?”

For delivery workers, if the food is wrong:

  • “I just deliver what the restaurant gives me. You’ll need to contact support for a refund or replacement.”

Don’t argue. Don’t apologize excessively. Just state what you can and can’t do.

Delivery-Specific Phrases

Handing food over is a quick interaction. Make it clean.

  • “Here’s your order. Enjoy!”
  • “I’ll leave it at the door as requested.”
  • “Your drinks are in the bag, just so you know.”

If the customer thanks you:

  • “No problem. Have a good one!”
  • “Take care!”

That’s it. Three seconds and you’re gone.

Here’s a simple breakdown of how a typical interaction flows:

1. Greet Confirm name & location
2. Navigate Give ETA or ask for help
3. Deliver Hand over order / drop off
4. Close Say goodbye & move on

Quick Practice Exercise

Read these scenarios and say the phrase out loud. Don’t just read it in your head.

  1. A customer meets you at the door, but she looks confused. What do you say?

    • Answer: “Hi, are you [name]? I have your delivery.”
  2. The restaurant forgot to give you napkins. The customer asks where they are. What do you say?

    • Answer: “Sorry, the restaurant didn’t include them. You can request extra next time.”
  3. Your passenger asks, “How long until we get there?” You see traffic ahead. What do you say?

    • Answer: “Normally 10 minutes, but there’s some traffic. Probably 15.”

Practice these with a friend or just to yourself while you drive. It makes the real conversation easier.

Mastering these phrases will save you stress and help you earn better tips and ratings. The best drivers communicate clearly, not perfectly.
