Descubre cómo usar la función “Define” de Google para ampliar tu vocabulario inglés al instante

Deja los listados de palabras. Con la herramienta gratuita Define de Google, aprende vocabulario en inglés naturalmente, con pronunciación y ejemplos.

4 min de Reading

We all know the classic problem. You pick up a vocabulary book or open an app, promising yourself you’ll learn twenty new words today. Forty minutes later, you’ve memorised maybe three definitions. They evaporate the next morning.

There’s a much simpler way. You already carry the world’s best dictionary in your pocket. I’m talking about Google Search’s “define” feature. It’s quick, it’s free, and it works in real situations where you actually encounter the word.

You don’t need to open a special app or navigate to a dictionary website. Just type define followed by the word you want to check.

Example: If you see “ambiguous” in a news headline, just search:

define ambiguous

Google instantly pulls up a clean card at the top of the results. That small card contains everything you need.

What the Card Actually Gives You

The best part? It’s not just the definition. That card holds three to four layers of instant learning:

  • The simple definition. Google prefers short, clear explanations. If the word has multiple meanings, it shows the most common one first.
  • Pronunciation. You hear it spoken out loud – optional British or American accent. Click the little speaker icon.
  • Etymology (word origin). This is often hidden behind a small arrow or “see origin” link. Tap it. Knowing the root of a word helps it stick.
  • Synonyms. Right below the definition, you often get two or three common substitutes.

Here’s a simple reference for how to use each part:

A Practical Habit to Build (and Keep)

This tool is only useful if you actually use it when you need it. Don’t wait for “study time.” Do it in the moment.

Try this three-second rule: The next time you read something in English – an article, a tweet, a menu, an email – and you pause because a word looks unfamiliar, do not underline it and promise to look it up later. Search it immediately. The context is still fresh in your mind. That moment of curiosity is pure fuel for memory.

I do this myself. Last week I was reading a travel blog and hit the word herringbone. No idea. I searched:

define herringbone pattern

The definition appeared with an image. It took five seconds. I will remember that word forever because my brain paired it with the context of the article plus the visual.

Beyond the Definition: a Two-Word List Trick

Here’s a tiny hack to turn this into a long-term habit. Open a free Notes app or just the Google Keep widget on your phone. Every time you look up a word using define, write the word and the sentence you found it in.

Don’t write the full definition. Write the sentence. Your brain reconstructs the meaning when you revisit it.

Example:

*ambient* – “The ambient music in the café made conversation feel private.”

When you scroll through your list on the bus, you recall the scene. That works much better than a dry dictionary entry.

One thing to watch out for

Google’s definitions are sourced from trusted dictionaries, but they are simplified. For advanced learners preparing for a C1 or C2 exam, check a more exhaustive source (like the Oxford or Longman learner’s dictionary) if the Google definition feels too vague. For everyday B1–B2 growth, Google’s card is perfect.
