You're at a café. The server asks: "Coffee or tea?"
You might say: "I'll have both." Or: "Either one is fine." Or maybe: "Neither, thanks — just water."
That's real life. And that's exactly how correlative conjunctions work. They pair up two choices, two actions, or two ideas — and they make your English sound precise y natural.
The most common pairs are both…and, either…or, and neither…nor. Vamos a desglosarlos para que los uses sin dudar.
Both…And — Hablando de Dos Cosas Juntas
Usa both…and cuando quieres decir que dos elementos o ideas son verdaderas al mismo tiempo.
Regla: El verbo siempre es plural porque hablas de dos cosas juntas.
Ejemplos:
- Both the manager and the assistant are on leave.
- She speaks both French and Spanish fluently.
¿Ves algo? El verbo are permanece plural, aunque uno de los dos sujetos suene singular. Eso no se negocia con both…and.
Either…Or — Uno u Otro, No Ambos
Usa either…or cuando presentas una opción entre dos alternativas. Solo una ocurrirá.
Regla: El verbo concuerda con el sujeto más cercano (el que está justo antes del verbo).
Ejemplos:
- Either your brother or your parents are picking you up.
- Either your parents or your brother is picking you up.
¿Ves la diferencia? Cuando your brother está más cerca del verbo, el verbo es is (singular). Cuando your parents está más cercano, el verbo es are (plural).
Esto confunde a muchos aprendices. Entrena para mirar el último sujeto antes del verbo.
Neither…Nor — Ninguno de los Dos
Usa neither…nor para decir que ninguna de las opciones es verdadera. Es la versión negativa de either…or.
Regla: Igual que con either…or — el verbo concuerda con el sujeto más cercano.
Ejemplos:
- Neither the teacher nor the students want to stay late.
- Neither the students nor the teacher wants to stay late.
Importante: No añadas un segundo negativo más adelante en la oración. Escribe:

❌ I don't have neither the time nor the money.
Ese doble negativo es un error común. Un solo negativo por frase basta.

Una Nota Rápida sobre la Estructura Paralela
Esto es algo que la mayoría de las guías omiten: mantén las dos partes gramaticalmente similares.
✅ She wants either to travel or to study abroad.
❌ She wants either to travel or studying abroad.
La misma regla se aplica a both…and y neither…nor. Empareja sustantivos con sustantivos, verbos con verbos, frases con frases. Así tus oraciones quedan limpias y profesionales.
La Conclusión
Las conjunciones correlativas no son complicadas — solo son pares. Both…and significa juntos. Either…or significa elegir uno. Neither…nor significa ninguno de ellos.
