How to Use English for Writing an Amazon Product Listing: A Practical Guide for Online Sellers

Learn essential e-commerce English vocabulary and tips for writing Amazon product listings that sell. A practical guide for non-native sellers.

A few years ago, I met a seller from Thailand who had great products but almost no sales. His Amazon listing was full of awkward phrases like "This product can make you happy" and "High quality material." He had the right idea — he just didn’t know the right English. If that sounds familiar, this guide is for you.

Writing an Amazon listing in English isn’t about perfect grammar. It’s about using the right words to make customers trust you, understand your product, and click "Add to Cart." Let’s break it down step by step.

Why English Matters for Your Amazon Listing

Amazon is an English-dominant marketplace, even if you sell in other countries. The standard listing structure — title, bullet points, description — is designed for English readers. If your text feels unnatural, shoppers bounce. They don’t care that English isn’t your first language; they care about clarity.

Good English in a listing builds credibility. Bad English makes customers wonder if the product is cheap or unreliable. That’s a hard lesson, but true.

The Anatomy of a Winning Amazon Listing

Every successful listing has three core parts that work together. Let’s look at each one, with real examples.

Title

Keywords + benefits + brand

Bullet Points

5 key features in short lines

Description

Story, use case, guarantee

Title

Keep it under 200 characters. Start with the most important keyword. For example: "Stainless Steel Water Bottle 32oz – Leak-Proof, Double-Walled, Keeps Cold 24 Hours". That’s clear and packed with search terms.

Bullet Points

You get five. Don’t waste them on fluff. Each bullet should answer “What’s in it for me?” Examples:

  • Leak-proof lid – no spills in your bag.
  • Double-walled insulation – ice stays cold for 24 hours.
  • BPA-free stainless steel – safe for you and the planet.

Notice the short, direct sentences. Use adjectives that trigger emotion: durable, lightweight, easy-to-clean, ergonomic.

Product Description

Here you can tell a story. Explain a typical use, highlight the main benefit, and end with a guarantee or warranty. Keep paragraphs short (2-3 sentences). Avoid long blocks of text.

E-Commerce English Vocabulary You Need

Some words and phrases appear in almost every top-selling listing. Learn them, but use them naturally. Don’t just copy-paste.

Here are a few I recommend:

  • Durable – stronger than “strong”. Use for materials or construction.
  • Versatile – works for many purposes.
  • User-friendly – easy to use, especially for electronics.
  • Compact – small but functional.
  • Eco-friendly – good for the environment.

These words signal quality. But pair them with concrete facts. “Durable stainless steel” is better than “very strong material.”

Common Mistakes Non-Native Sellers Make

I see the same errors again and again. Here are the three most damaging ones.

1. Missing Articles (a, an, the)

English needs articles. “This is high quality product” → “This is a high-quality product.” Always check for missing a, an, or the.

2. Wrong Prepositions

We say “made of” not “made from” for materials. “Compatible with” not “compatible for.” These small changes make your English sound native.

3. Overly Formal Language

Amazon customers want simple, friendly language. Don’t write “We hereby present to you our product.” Write “Meet your new favorite kitchen tool.” It’s direct and warm.

A Quick Template to Get Started

If you are stuck, use this skeleton. Fill in your own details.

Title: [Main Feature] + [Product Type] – [Key Benefit 1], [Key Benefit 2]

Bullet Points:

  • [Feature 1]: [benefit in action]
  • [Feature 2]: [benefit in action]
  • [Feature 3]: [benefit in action]
  • [Feature 4]: [benefit in action]
  • [Feature 5]: [benefit in action]

Description: Start with a question or a scenario: “Tired of warm drinks on a cold day? Our insulated mug...” Then list top 2-3 benefits in short sentences. End with a satisfaction guarantee.

That’s it. No need for fancy words. Just clear, customer-focused English.

Your Amazon listing is your storefront. If the English isn’t strong, customers walk away. But with the right vocabulary and structure, you can compete with native speakers and win sales.
