Headset — The device you wear on your head (Quest, Valve Index, etc.).
"Check if the headset is tracking properly before testing."
Field of View (FOV) — How wide the visible area is inside the headset.
"We need to increase the FOV without dropping the frame rate."
Render distance — How far the engine draws objects around the player.
"Lower the render distance for mobile VR builds."
Tracking — How the system records movement (head, hands, controllers).
"Tracking fails when the user moves too fast."
Frame rate — How many frames the system outputs per second (target: 72–90 fps).
"If the frame rate dips below 72, users get sick."
Latency — Delay between a user's action and the visual response.
"Anything above 20ms latency breaks immersion."
Shader — Code that runs on the GPU for rendering surfaces.
"This shader handles the water reflection in VR."
Verbs That Show Up in Every VR Meeting
To render — To draw or generate visuals from the engine.
"The scene won't render correctly on older GPUs."
To snap — To jump or lock a position instantly.
"We snap the hand position to the nearest anchor point."
To teleport — To move the player's position instantly.
"Teleport is the safest movement option to reduce motion sickness."
To calibrate — To set up sensors or tracking correctly before a session.
"Make sure you calibrate the floor height for standing mode."
To occlude — To block a view or an object behind another.
"Don't let the menu occlude the playable area."
The Big One: Locomotion
"Locomotion" refers to how the user moves inside the virtual world. It's not simple. Bad locomotion makes people nauseous.
Common locomotion patterns:
- Teleportation movement — Instant, safe. The standard for comfort.
- Smooth locomotion — Walking with a joystick. More immersive but risky.
- Arm-swing locomotion — You swing your arms to walk. Moderate comfort, great presence.
When you discuss locomotion with your team, use precise verbs: smooth turning vs. snap turning, head-relative vs. hand-relative movement.
Real Dialog Example (Not Textbookspeak)
Here's a short exchange you'd actually hear in a stand-up meeting:
Dev A: "The headset tracking is drifting after 30 seconds."
Dev B: "Check the shader. The frame rate drops below 70 in that scene."
Dev A: "Should we switch to teleport locomotion for the demo?"
Dev B: "No, they asked for smooth movement. Just optimize the render distance."
