Why Robotics English Matters
If you work—or want to work—in robotics, you already know the field is global. English is the default language for technical documentation, research papers, and most programming environments. You don't need to sound like a poet, but you do need to understand and use the right words when you're debugging a sensor or discussing a control loop with a colleague in another country.
Let's cut through the noise. Here's the core English vocabulary for robotics engineering—words you'll actually hear on the job, plus a few tips on how to use them naturally.
Hardware Terms You Can't Ignore
Robots are physical things. Before you program them, you have to know what they're made of.
Actuator – The part that makes the robot move. Motors, cylinders, and linear drives are all actuators.
Example: "We need to replace the actuator on the arm – it's not delivering enough torque."
End effector – The tool attached to the robot's wrist. Could be a gripper, a welder, a camera, or a suction cup.
Example: "Choose an end effector that can handle fragile objects without breaking them."
Sensor – Any device that collects data from the environment. Lidar, force sensors, accelerometers.
Example: "The force sensor detected an unexpected collision and stopped the robot."
Degrees of freedom (DoF) – The number of independent movements a robot can make. A typical industrial arm has 6 DoF.
Example: "This collaborative robot has 7 degrees of freedom, giving it more flexibility."
Payload – The maximum weight a robot can carry.
Example: "Check the payload capacity before you attach that heavy tool."

Once the hardware is set, you write code that tells the robot what to do. These words come up constantly.
Kinematics – The math of motion without considering forces. Forward kinematics calculates the end effector position from joint angles. Inverse kinematics does the opposite.
Example: "The inverse kinematics solver failed because the target position was out of reach."
Trajectory planning – Defining the path the robot's end effector will follow.
Example: "We need a smooth trajectory to avoid jerky movements."
Feedback control – Using sensor data to adjust the robot's actions in real time. PID control is the classic example.
Example: "The feedback control loop keeps the arm steady even when the payload shifts."
ROS (Robot Operating System) – A flexible framework for writing robot software. Not an actual operating system, but the standard middleware.
Example: "Publish the sensor data to a ROS topic so the navigation node can use it."
State machine – A way to model robot behavior as a set of states (e.g., idle, moving, grasping, error).
Example: "The state machine transitions to 'error' when a fault is detected."
