10 دقائق للReading

Capital letters seem simple, right? Yet they cause more confusion than most people admit. I've seen advanced learners write beautiful sentences but forget to capitalise the word "I" or the name of a city. And honestly? That small mistake makes the whole sentence look careless.

الكتابة بحروف كبيرة تبدو بسيطة، أليس كذلك؟ لكنها تسبب أكثر ارتباكاً مما يقرره معظم الناس. رأيت متعلمين متقدمين يكتبون جملًا جميلة لكنهم ينسون كتابة حرف "I" الكبير أو اسم مدينة ما. وبصراحة؟ هذا الخطأ البسيط يجعل الجملة بأكملها تبدو غير دقيقة.

The truth is, English capitalization rules aren't random. They follow a clear logic. Once you understand that logic, you stop guessing and start writing with confidence.

الحقيقة هي أن قواعد التمييز بالحروف الكبيرة في الإنجليزية ليست عشوائية. تتبع منطقًا واضحًا. بمجرد فهمك لهذا المنطق، تتوقف عن التخمين وتبدأ بالكتابة بثقة.

Let me walk you through the rules that matter most.

دعني أشرح لك القواعد التي تهم أكثر.

The Absolute Basics: What Always Gets a Capital Letter

الأساسيات المطلقة: ما الذي يُكتب دائمًا بحرف كبير

Some things in English are never optional when it comes to capital letters. These are the non-negotiables.

بعض الأشياء في الإنجليزية لا تُترك خيارًا عندما يتعلق الأمر بالحروف الكبيرة. هذه هي القواعد التي لا يمكن التفاوض عليها.

The first word of every sentence. This one is obvious, but you'd be surprised how often learners miss it in fast writing or text messages. Always capitalise the first letter after a period, question mark, or exclamation point.

الكلمة الأولى في كل جملة. هذا واضح، لكنك ستتفاجأ بمدى تكرار فقدان المتعلمين لها أثناء الكتابة السريعة أو رسائل النص. دائمًا اكتب الحرف الأول بعد النقطة أو علامة الاستفهام أو التعجب بحرف كبير.

The pronoun "I". This is unique to English. In many languages, "i" stays lowercase. Not in English. "I" is always capitalised, no matter where it appears in a sentence. Write "my friend and I", not "my friend and i".

ضمير "أنا". هذا فريد من نوعه في الإنجليزية. في العديد من اللغات، يبقى حرف "i" صغيرًا. ليس في الإنجليزية. يُكتب "I" دائمًا بحرف كبير، بغض النظر عن مكان ظهوره في الجملة. اكتب "my friend and I"، وليس "my friend and i".

Proper nouns. These are specific names of people, places, organisations, and things. John, Paris, Microsoft, Monday, January, Christmas. If it's a specific name, it gets a capital.

الأسماء الصحيحة. هذه هي الأسماء المحددة للأشخاص، الأماكن، المنظمات، والأشياء. جون، باريس، مايكروسوفت، الاثنين، يناير، عيد الميلاد. إذا كان اسمًا محددًا، يُكتب بحرف كبير.

Here's a quick comparison to show the difference:

إليك مقارنة سريعة تُظهر الفرق:

✓ Capitalised
  • I visited London in June
  • Dr. Smith works at Harvard
  • We celebrate Easter every year
  • She speaks English and French
✗ Not Capitalised
  • a city, a month (general reference)
  • a doctor, a university (general role)
  • a holiday (general reference)
  • languages (only when named)

Titles and Headings: Where Learners Get Stuck

العناوين والعناوين الفرعية: أين يعلق المتعلمون

Titles cause the most hesitation. Should you capitalise "the" in a book title? What about "and" or "of"?

العناوين تُسبب أكثر التردد. هل يجب عليك كتابة حرف كبير في كلمة "the" داخل عنوان كتاب؟ ماذا عن "and" أو "of"؟

Here's the rule most style guides agree on:

إليك القاعدة التي يتفق عليها معظم أدلة الأسلوب:

Capitalise the first and last word of any title or heading.

اكتب بحرف كبير الكلمة الأولى والأخيرة في أي عنوان أو عنوان فرعي.

Capitalise all major words. Major words include nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. So "The Cat in the Hat" starts with "The" (first word) and ends with "Hat" (last word). "In" and "the" stay lowercase because they are short prepositions and articles.

اكتب بحرف كبير جميع الكلمات الرئيسية. تشمل الكلمات الرئيسية الأسماء، الفعل، الصفات، الظروف، والضمائر. لذا يبدأ عنوان "The Cat in the Hat" بـ "The" (الكلمة الأولى) وينتهي بـ "Hat" (الكلمة الأخيرة). تبقى "In" و "the" صغيرة لأنها حروف جر قصيرة ومقالات.

Do NOT capitalise short words like articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or), and short prepositions (in, on, at, for, with) — unless they are the first or last word.

لا تكتب بحرف كبير الكلمات القصيرة مثل المقالات (a، an، the)، حروف العطف (and، but، or)، والجرات القصيرة (in، on، at، for، with) — إلا إذا كانت الكلمة الأولى أو الأخيرة.

Some examples:

بعض الأمثلة:

  • To Kill a Mockingbird (correct)
  • The Lord of the Rings (correct)
  • A Game of Thrones (correct)
  • The Girl on the Train (correct)

Notice how "a", "of", "on" stay lowercase. This is the standard rule for English titles.

لاحظ كيف تبقى "a"، "of"، "on" صغيرة. هذه هي القاعدة القياسية لعناوين الإنجليزية.

Days, Months, Holidays — But Not Seasons

أيام، أشهر، أعياد — لكن ليس الفصول

Days of the week and months of the year always get capital letters. Always.

أيام الأسبوع وشهور السنة دائمًا تُكتب بحروف كبيرة. دائمًا.

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
  • January, February, March
  • Christmas, Easter, Ramadan

ومع ذلك، seasons do not get capitalised — unless they are part of a proper name, like "Winter Olympics" or "Spring Festival".

لكن الفصول لا تُكتب بحروف كبيرة — إلا إذا كانت جزءًا من اسم صحيح، مثل "Winter Olympics" أو "Spring Festival".

Write "I love autumn" not "I love Autumn". Write "next summer" not "next Summer". This confuses a lot of learners because seasons feel important. But in English, they are treated like common nouns.

اكتب "أحب الخريف" وليس "أحب Autumn". اكتب "الربيع القادم" وليس "next Summer". هذا يخلط الكثير من المتعلمين لأن الفصول تبدو مهمة، لكن في الإنجليزية تُعامل كأسماء عامة.

When NOT to Capitalise: The Tricky Cases

متى لا تكتب بحرف كبير: الحالات المعقدة

Now for the exceptions that trip everyone up.

الآن للثناءات التي تربك الجميع.

Job titles. Capitalise a job title only when it comes directly before a person's name or is used as a form of address. "Professor Adams is here" but "the professor is here." "I saw President Carter" but "I saw the president."

العناوين الوظيفية. اكتب عنوان وظيفي بحرف كبير فقط عندما يسبق مباشرة اسم شخص أو يُستخدم كطريقة للترحيب. "Professor Adams is here" لكن "the professor is here". "I saw President Carter" لكن "I saw the president".

Family titles. Same rule. "I asked Mom" (when using "Mom" as a name) but "I asked my mom" (when using it as a common noun).

العناوين العائلية. نفس القاعدة. "I asked Mom" (عند استخدام "Mom" كاسم) لكن "I asked my mom" (عند استخدامها كاسم عام).

Directions. Capitalise "North", "South", etc. only when they refer to specific regions. "I live in the South" (region) but "Drive south for two miles" (direction).

الاتجاهات. اكتب "North"، "South" إلخ بحرف كبير فقط عندما تشير إلى مناطق محددة. "I live in the South" (منطقة) لكن "Drive south for two miles" (اتجاه).

School subjects. Capitalise only if it is a language or a specific course name. "I study history" but "I study English." "I took History 101" but "I took a history class."

المواد الدراسية. اكتب بحرف كبير فقط إذا كانت لغة أو اسم دورة محددة. "I study history" لكن "I study English". "I took History 101" لكن "I took a history class".

A Quick Flow to Decide

مسار سريع لاتخاذ القرار

When you're unsure whether to capitalise a word, ask yourself these three questions in order:

عندما لا تكون متأكدًا من كتابة كلمة بحرف كبير، اسأل نفسك هذه الأسئلة الثلاثة بالترتيب:

1
Is it the first word of a sentence? → Yes? Capitalise. No? Move to the next question.
2
Is it a specific name or title? → Yes? Capitalise. No? Move to the next question.
3
Is it "I", a language, a day, or a month? → Yes? Capitalise. No? Keep it lowercase.

Common Mistakes I See Students Make

الأخطاء الشائعة التي أراها لدى الطلاب

After years of teaching English, these are the mistakes I see most often:

بعد سنوات من تدريس الإنجليزية، هذه هي الأخطاء التي أرىها أكثر ما شيوعًا:

  1. Capitalising random nouns for emphasis. "She is a Great writer." No. "Great" doesn't get a capital just because you think it's important. Only proper nouns get capitals.

  2. Forgetting to capitalise the word after a colon. In most cases, do not capitalise the word after a colon unless it starts a complete sentence.

  3. Over-capitalising in email subject lines. Subject lines follow title case rules, but many learners capitalise every word. That actually looks informal and messy.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

لماذا هذا مهم أكثر مما تتخيل

Good capitalization tells your reader you care. When I see an email or an essay with correct capital letters, I instantly trust the writer more. It signals professionalism and attention to detail.

الكتابة بحروف كبيرة تُظهر للقراء أنك تهتم. عندما أرى بريدًا إلكترونيًا أو مقالة مع حروف كبيرة صحيحة، أثق بالكاتب فورًا. يُشير ذلك إلى الاحترافية والاهتمام بالتفاصيل.

Bad capitalization, on the other hand, distracts. The reader stops focusing on your message and starts noticing your mistakes. That's the last thing you want.

من ناحية أخرى، التمييز السيئ يشتت الانتباه. يتوقف القارئ عن التركيز على رسالتك ويبدأ في ملاحظة أخطائك. هذا هو الشيء الأخير الذي تريده.

The rules are simple once you group them together. Proper names, sentence starts, the word "I", days, months, holidays — yes. Everything else — no, unless it's a title following specific conventions.

القواعد بسيطة بمجرد تجميعها معًا. الأسماء الصحيحة، بدايات الجمل، كلمة "أنا"، الأيام، الأشهر، الأعياد — نعم. كل شيء آخر — لا، إلا إذا كان عنوانًا يتبع قواعد محددة.

Practice by reading more English texts and consciously noticing how they capitalise words. You'll start seeing the patterns everywhere.

مارس ذلك بقراءة المزيد من النصوص الإنجليزية وملاحظة كيف تُكتب الكلمات بحروف كبيرة. ستبدأ برؤية الأنماط في كل مكان.
