You call a friend “nice” all the time, but is that really enough? There’s a whole spectrum of character between “kind” and “grumpy,” and knowing the right adjectives makes your English sound a lot more natural. More importantly, you need the collocations – the word pairs that native speakers actually use. Let’s look at the most common personality traits and the expressions that go with them.

Positive Traits: More Than Just “Good”

When you want to say something great about someone, try these adjectives and the phrases that naturally follow them.

• Outgoing / Sociable – She’s incredibly outgoing.
• Down-to-earth – He’s a very down-to-earth person.
• Easy-going – They’re pretty easy-going about most things.
• Trustworthy – She’s one of the most trustworthy people I know.
• Warm-hearted – He has a warm-hearted nature.

Notice the small words before the adjective: incredibly, very, pretty, most. These intensifiers are part of the collocation. If you say “He is warm-hearted” it’s correct, but “He is a very warm-hearted person” sounds more like real conversation.

Negative Traits (Without Being Rude)

Sometimes you need to describe a tricky personality, but you want to stay polite or honest without sounding harsh.

• Stubborn – He can be quite stubborn once he’s made up his mind.
• Moody – She gets moody when she’s tired.
• Introverted (not exactly negative, but often misunderstood) – He’s fairly introverted and needs time alone to recharge.
• Impatient – I’m a bit impatient with slow service.
• Arrogant – She comes across as arrogant, but she’s actually just shy.

Using adverbs like quite, fairly, a bit softens the criticism. That’s the key to describing personality negatively without sounding mean.

Neutral & Flexible Adjectives

Some adjectives can be positive or negative depending on the context. These are especially useful because they appear in many situations.

Ambitious – She’s ambitious and always wants to be the best. (usually positive)
Competitive – He’s really competitive, even in board games. (can be good or exhausting)
Sensitive – She’s sensitive to criticism. (often neutral – it means she cares)
Independent – He’s very independent and prefers to work alone. (positive in work, maybe negative in a team)

Collocations for these often use very or really, and sometimes too (e.g., too ambitious).

The Most Common Collocation Patterns

Instead of memorising isolated words, learn these three sentence frames. They cover 80% of real-life personality descriptions.
